About the Authors
The authors are seasoned
entrepreneurial travelers. They have experienced and observed,
first-hand, both the successes and failures of companies in a
wide variety of industries. These experiences have provided valuable
insights into certain key principles that have led to successful
business endeavors, as well as guidelines for avoiding hazards
and detours along the way. Through this road map, they share
these key principles and guidelines with other travelers.
Lyle Maul has been a principal investor, cofounder, and/or
key executive in over a dozen start-up businesses in a variety
of different industries, including microcomputer, real estate,
health care, mail-order, restaurant, clothing-accessory, and
publishing companies. One successful company that he cofounded
achieved an annual sales volume in excess of $100 million in
its fourth full year of business, $200 million in its fifth year
and will exceed $300 million in its sixth full year of operation.
According to Inc. Magazine, this company was the fifth fastest-growing,
privately-held company in the nation in 1988.
Lyle began building businesses in his early twenties, while earning
a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and a Master's
Degree in Entrepreneurship and Venture Management from the University
of Southern California. His goal while in college was to achieve
sufficient financial success to have the option of retiring by
the time he was thirty-five so that he could pursue other interests.
Following a three-point plan, which is described in Chapter 2,
"Choosing Your Destination," he realized his goal.
By the time Lyle reached his goal, he realized that he thrived
on the thrill and challenge of entrepreneurism, so he has continued
to cofound, invest in, consult with and/or serve as a director
for many new business ventures. However, Lyle now enjoys a fulfilling
balance between personal and business interests. He now has time
to actively participate in raising his two young children with
his wife, Linda, as well as time to travel, write this book,
give lectures for the benefit of other entrepreneurs, and enjoy
a wide variety of recreational activities.
Dianne Mayfield believes that it is never too late to follow your
heart and pursue your dreams. She began her entrepreneurial adventures
at the age of thirty-five. While in her late twenties, Dianne
chose to pursue a career as an attorney. Upon receiving her law
degree from Washington University, she practiced law with a large
firm and served as in-house counsel to a real estate franchise
corporation. Then, in her mid-thirties, she decided to trade
the security of a steady salary for the challenge, freedom and
fulfillment of establishing her own law firm in the Washington,
D.C. area.
Through her firm, Dianne has provided legal and business advice
to a broad diversity of businesses, ranging from start-up operations
to "Fortune 500" companies. In addition to practicing
law, she has participated as a founder and key executive in a
number of other entrepreneurial endeavors, including a franchise
consulting firm, publishing company and dining/health club for
business executives.
As a frequent speaker before business and college groups, Dianne
encourages her listeners to have the courage to express their
business creativity and the foresight to control their risks
while doing so.
